Kapac Qolla dancers traditionally represent merchants who used to come from the altiplano / Lake Titicaca region (Collasuyu was the Inca name for the southern quarter of their empire Tawantinsuyu). The distribution of gifts to the awaiting crowds is a popular part of the festival, and symbolises the generosity of the Virgen being shared among everyone present.
