Found from SW Colombia south to central Argentina and Chile in a wide range of semi open dry habitats on western slopes and valleys of Andes at altitudes between 2000-4300m. It is the largest member of the hummingbird family, reaching a length of 20-21cm (8-8.25") and weighing 18–24g (0.63–0.85 oz). Local names: picaflor gigante, burro q'enti.
