Breeds in northern tundra of eastern Siberia, Canada and Greenland. Migrates to central and southern South America in winter (a few nonbreeding birds may also be present all year round). In Peru, Bolivia and Chile more common on shores of high altitude lakes and wetlands (both freshwater and saline, 3200-4600m) than lowlands and coasts.
