Found on lakes at high altitudes (3900-4600m) in the Andes in central and southern Peru, western Bolivia and northern Chile. It is the second largest member of the Rallidae family (adults have a total length of 48–64cm / 19–25in) and generally considered to be flightless. Local names: gallareta gigante, tagua gigante. Sajama volcano (6542m / 21,465ft) is the highest peak in neighbouring Bolivia.
