The Temple of Triumph was built in 1536 and was the first church to be built in Cusco. It was built over Suntur Wasi, site of the final stand by the Spanish against the much larger Inca army. The Catholic conquistadores attributed this victory to Saint James the Great (the patron saint of Spain), who was said to have descended from heaven to drive back the Incas. Hence his statute on top of the church. The church is called the Temple of Triumph after this victory.
