Juvenile dark morph Variable hawk ( Buteo polyosoma )
Found throughout western South America and the Andes, often as high as 4,800m in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Plumage is very variable, and its taxonomy is disputed and contorversial. Formerly 2 species were recognised, the Red-backed Hawk (Buteo polyosoma) and the Puna Hawk (Buteo poecilochrous). Both are now classed as the Variable hawk.
