Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) feeding on dead Guanay cormorant (Phalacrocorax bougainvillii), showing nictating membrane over eye
Found from southern Canada south throughout the Americas to southern South America in a wide range of habitats. Less common at higher altitudes and absent from the high Andes. The pale grey edges of the secondary wing feathers suggest this is the Chilean turkey vulture subspecies Cathartes aura jota. Local names: jote cabeza colorada, zamuro cabecirojo, peroquí, buitre de cabeza roja.
