The coca leaf has long been used as a traditional medicine and is also recognised for its health benefits. A variety of coca based food and drink products have become popular in Bolivia in recent years and the government has encouraged their production to expand the local market for non narco coca based products. The 1961 UN Convention prohibits their export however.
