Beni is a large and sparsely populated Department covering 213,564 km² / 82,458 sq miles in the lowlands of northern Bolivia, its capital is Trinidad. Much of the Department consists of tropical forests, plains, swamps and savannahs and it is crossed by several rivers which are tributaries of the Amazon. Cattle ranching and agriculture are the main industries; the small town of Rurrenabaque in the far west of the Department on the banks of the River Beni is an important tourist destination.
