The Cordillera Real (or “Royal Range”) is the longest and highest range in in the Bolivian Andes and also the most accessible. 6 6000m peaks and many higher than 5000m can be found within its nearly 100 mile / 160 km length, and the southern part of the range can be seen from La Paz (see the La Paz City galleries for views of La Paz and El Alto with mountains in the background). Notable peaks that are popular with climbers include Illimani (6439m / 21,125ft), Huayna Potosí (6088m / 19,975ft), Condoriri (5648m / 18,530ft), Ancohuma (Janq'u Uma and other similar spellings, 6427m / 21,085ft) and Illampu (6368m / 20,890ft). Bolivia's altiplano plains lie to west of the range; on the eastern side the mountains drop precipitously to the subtropical Yungas region and Amazon lowlands.
