La Paz city flags, Presidential Palace and new Government Palace / Casa Grande del Pueblo under construction, Plaza Murillo, La Paz, Bolivia
This image shows the controversial new Government Palace / Casa Grande del Pueblo under construction behind the Presidential Palace (which it will replace). Construction on this 29 storey building started in 2014 and will cost around $36 million dollars. Critics have questioned whether it is actually necessary and whether the money could have been better spent on other projects, and also the huge visual impact it has on the historic city centre. The red and green flag is the flag of both La Paz city and Department. It is flown during July; July 16th is the date of the city's anniversary festivites which mark the start of an uprising against the Spanish authorities on July 16th 1809.
