The valleys and hillsides surrounding the lower Zona Sur districts of La Paz contain some fantastic and colourful rock formations and "badlands" scenery. The best known is the Valle de la Luna / Valley of the Moon in Mallasa in the Rio Abajo / River La Paz valley. A larger and more spectacular area, Valle de las Animas / Valley of Souls covers much of the hillsides on the east of the city where the high altiplano drops into the valleys. Another prominent and iconic landmark is La Muela del Diablo / The Devil's Tooth (a volcanic neck, the solidified core of an extinct volcano) overlooks the Zona Sur. As the city spreads many new suburbs are now extending into these lower valleys and formations. Images of these 3 formations and others in the Rio Abajo area can be found in this gallery.
