Adult Peruvian pelican (Pelecanus thagus) in breeding plumage in fishing port, Arica, Region XV, Chile
The Peruvian pelican is common in the cold Humboldt Current region off Pacific coasts of Peru and Chile. Non breeding birds often wander north to Ecuador. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the (much smaller) brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis). Local name: pelícano.
