Iquique is an important port and seaside resort city in northern Chile and the capital of the Tarapacá Region. It is also home to a large Free Zone (the Zofri). It was originally part of Peru until the War of the Pacific; the Battle of Iquique was fought on 21st May 1879 in the harbour and Iquique became part of Chile on 25th November the same year. It developed rapidly during the nitrate mining boom of the 19th and early 20th centuries when it was the most important port in northern Chile and one of the most important on the Pacific coast of the Americas. Many of the city's historic buildings date from this period, including the impressive wooden mansions along the central Baquedano Street (which is a UNESCO Heritage Site).
