The Las Vicuñas National Reserve lies between Lauca National Park to the north and the Salar de Surire National Monument to the south; together they form the Lauca Biosphere Reserve which was recognised by UNESCO in 1981. It protects 209,131 hectares of mainly Central Andean dry puna and its associated wildlife, including (as the name suggests) vicuñas. Guallatiri volcano (6071m / 19,918ft, one of the most active in Chile) dominates views in the northern part of the Reserve.
