The Cusco Region covers 71,986 km2 / (27,794 sq miles in southern Peru, its capital is the city of Cusco. The Andes mountains and valleys cover much of the region (the 6384m / 20,945ft Mt Ausangate in the Cordillera Vilcanota is the highest point in the Region and 5th highest peak in Peru), while most of the remote north western part is Amazon rainforest.
