Adult Peruvian pelicans ( Pelecanus thagus ) in breeding plumage
Common in the cold Humboldt Current region off Pacific coasts of Peru and Chile. Non breeding birds often wander north to Ecuador. Formerly considered a subspecies of the (much smaller) brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis). Local name: pelícano.
