Adult Guanay cormorant ( Phalacrocorax bougainvillii )
Breeds on Pacific coasts of Peru and northern Chile. Spreads north (sometimes as far as Colombia) and south outside breeding season. It was historically the main producer of guano, seabird excrement that is highly prized as fertilizer. Guano extraction for export was a major industry in both Peru and Chile in the 19th century. Local name: guanay.
