Detail of carving above window on entrance facade of San Pedro church, La Paz, Bolivia
San Pedro's stone portal dates from 1790, when the church was rebuilt after the original was destroyed in a fire during a siege led by the indigenous leader Tupac Katari. It has both baroque and rococo features. Above the shield is a Christogram symbol, consisting of the letters IHS (a shortened form of the Greek word for Jesus) with a cross. It takes several forms.
