Statues of people making alfajores (for which the village is famous) in main square, Matilla , Region I , Chile
Matilla is a small oasis village that was founded in 1760. It was originally a grape growing and wine producing area, an activity that ceased in the 1930s. Today the oasis produces many fresh fruits and the village is noted for its alfajores (a type of sweet biscuit filled with fruit jam or caramel) and other confectionery products.
