Masked Majeño characters on horseback at Virgen del Carmen festival , Paucartambo , Peru
The Majeños represent the merchants who in the colonial period used to bring alcohol (especially aguadiente, a sugar based spirit) from the Majes valley (near Arequipa) to the high Andes using mule trains, hence the red noses and drunken behaviour!
