The peaks in the distance are part of the Nevado Tres Cruces volcano complex. The horned coot (Fulica cornuta) is a rare coot species only found in high altitude lakes and wetlands in the Puna de Atacama region. Laguna Santa Rosa is one of a limited number of breeding sites of the species.
