Side view of Santo Tomás church in Isluga village, Isluga National Park , Region I , Chile
Santo Tomás (St Thomas) church in Isluga village dates from the 17th / 18th centuries. It is built of rough stone and plastered with adobe (mud / clay) and lime. The separate bell tower is its most distinctive feature and the style is typical of the rustic churches of the period in the altiplano regions of northern Chile. Isluga itself is a "ceremonial" village; its Aymara inhabitants have all migrated to the cities on the coast in search of work and only return to the village to celebrate festivals.
