The Arica and Parinacota Region (formerly Region XV) is Chile's northernmost Region and covers an area of 16,873 km2 / 6,515 sq miles. It was created on 8th October 2007 (previously it had been part of the Tarapacá Region) with Arica as the regional capital (see the Arica City gallery for images of the city). The following galleries of Protected Areas are also located in the Arica and Parinacota Region: Lauca National Park, Las Vicuñas National Reserve, Salar de Surire National Monument. Together they form the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. UNESCO expanded the Biosphere Reserve in September 2021 to 1,026,567 hectares; as a result it now covers most of the Andean and pre-cordillera areas of the Region.
