Many rock art sites (including rock paintings and petroglyphs) can be found in Chile's Atacama Desert and also in the Andes mountains and foothills , and there are no doubt more waiting to be discovered. The majority are thought to have been made between 800-1400AD by several civilisations, some may well be a lot older. Many are on ancient trade routes used by llama caravans to travel between the Andes mountains and the coast and exchange products, others are likely to have been ceremonial sites.
